The Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs in the Kingdom of Bahrain, under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and President of Bahrain Olympic Committee, marked the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2018 by organizing the sporting event, “1000 steps for peace” at The Avenues Park.

The event included a 1000 steps walkathon, a 2 KM color run and fundraising to build a football field and playground in Al Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan with the cooperation of the Royal Charity Organization and the UNDP in Bahrain.

With a goal of 2000 attendees and an ambitious fundraising objective, the immensely worthy event surpassed its goals with phenomenal success. Drawing over 5000 participants (a 150% increase from its initial projection) and extraordinary digital engagement, the event raised sufficient funds from both the private and public sectors to build sports & play facilities in Al Zaatari camp.
